A plaque celebrating the community hospital in Sarisbury’s unique design was unveiled by Fareham’s deputy mayor at a special ceremony.
The Fareham Community Hospital in Brook Lane won the New Build category in the Fareham Society Diamond Jubilee Design Awards 2012.
The Deputy Mayor and her consort, Councillors Susan and Brian Bayford, unveiled the plaque while around 20 people looked on – a combination of NHS workers, the Friends of Fareham Community Hospital and planners and designers of the building.
Chairman of the Fareham Society Stephen Day said the hospital was chosen because of its inspiring design and use of ecological and environmentally friendly materials.
“Its internal use of colours is welcoming,” he said. “The simple radial plan with different colours and logos inspired by the four natural elements helps orientation throughout the building.
“Hopefully it might make people think about better design and be something for others to achieve.”
The society honoured outstanding examples of design and architecture from across the borough from the past three years. Its aim is to encourage public interest and the promotion of high standards of architecture and design in the borough.
“It’s a beautifully designed building,” said Cllr Susan Bayford. “It’s got an ambience that you’re not in a medical centre because of the design and decor, which leads to this feeling of relaxing.
“It’s a well deserved award for the architects, the planners and contractors who should all be highly commended for their work.”
Jill Sadler, chair of the Friends of Fareham Community Hospital, said the group nominated the building for the award and hosted the celebrations to involve the community with their hospital.
She said: “We thought it was such a lovely design, so we were thrilled to hear it won the best build award.”
Other winners of awards included Abshot Manor and Great Posbrook Barn, Course Park Cottages and Blackbrook House. The stunning wooden carvings on trees in Holly Hill Woodland Park in Sarisbury Green meant it scooped the landscape award – a prize which was also given to Stubbington Park.
