Young beaver scouts took part in a Fingerspellathon to raise money for deaf children.

The Sarisbury Beaver Scouts learned basic sign language to raise funds for the National Deaf Children’s Society (NDCS).

The six to eight-year-olds learned how to spell the alphabet and the Beaver Scouts’ promise, which is to promise to love God and help other people.

At the club night in Burridge Village Hall, 26 Beavers took part, along with their Scout leaders. They have yet to count up the cash, but hope to raise as much money as possible, which will provide new equipment for the deaf children.

Leader Maria Lennan said: “This month was highlighted by NDCS as the Fingerspellathon awareness month and that we could do a Fingeraspellathon.

“I felt it was quite good for the children to learn something and enable them to give something back to the community.

“It’s basic spelling but it would be nice at some point for them to meet up with somebody to use it and try out what they have learned on them.”
